Loksatta Party announced that its candidates for BBMP elections will declare their assets at the time of filing their nomination papers. They would also send a copy of these declarations to the office of the Lokayukta. At present, neither the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, nor national legislation on election candidates requires municipal election candidates to file their assets publicly, but Loksatta candidates would do so anyway.
Moreover, said party candidate Dr Shankara Prasad from Rajarajeswari Nagar, Loksatta welcomed the view of Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar that candidates of all parties should declare their assets publicly. Dr Prasad encouraged the minister to take up legislation to ensure this, and called upon other parties in the state to follow the lead of Loksatta. "There is no question of not filing our assets. The whole point of an election is for the voters to know the candidate and make an informed choice. It is absolutely essential that clear information about the candidates and their background is therefore available to the public. Only then can they choose the best candidate," he added.
The other candidates of the party, including Dr Meenakshi Bharath from Aramane Nagara and N S Ramakanth from Vasanth Nagar have also prepared their assets, and will declare them at the time of filing their papers. As and when other candidates are announced, they too would gladly follow this practice, the party announced.
